The Freedom of Not Giving a F*ck Anymore

,

You know what I’ve realized lately?

I’m at that age where I just don’t give a fuck anymore. 😂

Okay, maybe that sounds a little harsh. Because the truth is, I do care. I care about the people I love, the things that matter, and the kind of person I am. But what I no longer care about is what other people think of me, the decisions I make, or how I choose to live my life.

And let me tell you, it is SO freeing.

There was a time when I worried about not having a lot of friends. I wondered why certain people didn’t like me or whether I was doing something wrong simply by being myself. I used to overthink conversations, question my decisions, and sometimes feel like I needed to explain myself just to be understood.

But somewhere along the way, something changed.

I realized that not everyone is going to like me. Not everyone will understand me. And not everyone needs to.

I don’t need a huge circle of friends to feel like I belong. I don’t need everyone’s approval to feel good about my choices. And I certainly don’t need to make myself smaller just to make other people comfortable.

And another thing I’ve learned? I’m no longer allowing people to control me or dictate how I should live my life.

I’ve spent enough time worrying about other people’s expectations, trying to keep the peace, and sometimes going along with things just to avoid disappointing someone. But I’ve come to realize that there’s a difference between respecting someone’s opinion and allowing that opinion to control your decisions.

I can listen to advice without following it. I can disagree without being disrespectful. I can say no without feeling guilty. And I can set boundaries without having to explain or defend every single one of them.

I don’t need to be difficult or confrontational to stand up for myself. I can still be kind, thoughtful, and considerate while making it clear that my life, my choices, and my peace are mine to protect.

I’m learning to be okay with being misunderstood. To be comfortable with my own company. To appreciate the people who genuinely want to be part of my life without chasing those who don’t.

And the funny thing is, I don’t think I’ve become someone who cares less. I think I’ve just become more intentional about what deserves my energy.

Maybe that’s one of the beautiful things about getting older. You slowly stop trying to be who everyone else wants you to be and start feeling comfortable with the person you’ve been all along.

I’m still growing. Still learning. Still figuring things out.

But I’m finally at a place where I can say, this is me. Take it or leave it.

And for once, I’m perfectly okay with either.

Because there’s a different kind of peace that comes with no longer needing to be liked by everyone, and an even greater freedom in realizing that you don’t have to give anyone control over your life.

● About Me

Hi, I’m Selah Althea (SAY-lah Al-THEE-uh).

I’m a wife, a mom, and someone who’s learning that life doesn’t always have to be rushed. Somewhere along the way, I realized that some of the most meaningful moments happen when we slow down enough to notice them.

The name Selah is often understood as an invitation to pause and reflect. Althea means healing. Together, they remind me of the kind of life I’m trying to live—and the kind of space I hope this becomes.
